One of these government institutions is the Social Security System or SSS that provides social insurance, retirement benefits and health care for the workers in the private sector. It is being mandated by the government for all the private employees in the Philippines.

So what are the benefits offered by SSS?

Sickness benefits

It is the daily allowance paid for the number of days a member is absent due to sickness or accident related to his/her work.

Qualifications for Sickness benefits:

1. He/She is unable to work due to sickness or injury and confined either in the hospital or at home for at least 4 days.
2. Must at least have three months of contributions within the 12 month period immediately before the period of sickness has been paid.
3. He/She must utilize all the previous company sick leaves with pay.
4. He/She should inform the employer about the sickness or injury within the 5 days after the beginning of sickness by filing the application for sickness benefits.

If he or she is unemployed, the voluntary or self-employed member, the sickness notification should be directly submitted to the nearest SSS office. The member will be given sickness benefits for a maximum of 120 days in one calendar year.

Maternity Benefits

A daily cash allowance given to a female member who cannot work due to childbirth or miscarriage.

Qualifications for Maternity benefits:

1. The member has at least 3 monthly contributions within the 12 month period immediately following the period of her delivery or miscarriage.

2. She has duly notified her employer or company about her pregnancy if employed.
If she is separated, voluntary or self-employed member submit to the SSS office.

The maternity benefit shall be paid only for the first 4 deliveries or miscarriage. It is required to inform the SSS as soon as the member becomes pregnant and the probable date of her delivery of her child with at least 60 days from the date of conception.

Disability Benefits

Ensuring that the right cash benefit for the disability is well paid to deserving members. It is a cash benefit given either as a monthly pension or lump sum amount to the member who becomes permanently disabled, either having partial or total disability.

Qualifications for Disability Benefits:

The member who experiences partial or total disability with at least one monthly contribution paid to the SSS to the semester of contingency is qualified. Only totally and permanently disabled members will get a lifetime monthly pension.

A disability pensioner can also get a supplemental allowance of Php 500 is paid to the total or partial disability pensioner.

Partial Disability

A complete and permanent loss or use of any of the following body parts, but which does not totally prevent a member from engaging in any gainful occupation.

  • sight of one eye
  • one big toe
  • one hand
  • one arm
  • one foot
  • one leg
  • one ear
  • both ears

Permanent Total Disability
  1. complete loss of sight of both eyes;
  2. loss of two limbs at or above the ankle or wrists;
  3. permanent complete paralysis of two limbs;
  4. brain injury resulting to incurable imbecility or insanity; and
  5. such cases as determined and approved by the SSS.

Retirement Benefits

The cash benefit whether in a monthly pension or lump sum paid to a member who can not work because of old age.

Qualification of Retirement benefit

1. The member who reached the age of 60 years old, separated from employment or stop to be self-employed and has paid at least 120 monthly contributions prior to the semester of retirement.

2. The member who is 65 years of age whether employed or not employed or not and completed the 120 monthly contributions prior to the semester of retirement. beside from the retirement benefit, the retiree is given a 13-month pension payable every month of December.

Death Benefit

The cash benefit given either in monthly pension or lump sum paid to the beneficiaries of the deceased member. The deceased member is also given a 13-month pension payable every December.

Qualifications for Death Benefit:

1. The beneficiaries of the deceased member are the legitimate dependent, legitimated or legally adopted and illegitimate children of the member who are not yet reaching 21 years of age. In the absence of primary beneficiaries, the dependent parents shall be the secondary beneficiaries.

There are two types of death benefit paid to beneficiaries of a member: Pension and Lump sum Amount.

To qualify for either, the member must have met the following:

2a. For Pension - the deceased member must have paid at least 36 monthly contributions before the semester of death.

2b. For Lump sum Amount -  granted to the primary beneficiaries of a deceased member who had paid less than 36 monthly contributions before the semester of death. Also, in the absence of primary beneficiaries, the secondary beneficiaries are granted the death benefit in lump sum amount.

Funeral Benefit

It is a cash benefit of Php 20,000 to Php 40,000 and will be given to whoever pays the burial expenses of the deceased member or pensioner.

Conditions of Funeral benefit:

For self -employed/nonworking spouse/OFW members, the deceased SSS member must have paid at least 1 monthly contribution for his /her beneficiaries to be entitled to the funeral benefit.

For employed members and those separated from employment, the deceased must be informed for the coverage by his/her employer, even if no contribution was paid, for his/her beneficiaries to be entitled to the funeral benefit.
