We have been taught by our parents and elderly that education is a pivotal key to success. Sadly, many children nowadays don't really understand the importance of education, increasing the rate of out-of-school children.

According to UNESCO, there are about 262 million children and youth that are out of school, based on the UIS data for the school year ending in 2017. The total includes 64 million children of primary school age, 61 million of lower secondary school age and 138 million on the upper secondary age.

In the Philippines, 9 percent of Filipinos ages 6-24 are out of school youth. Most common reasons among them are marriage or family matters, lack of personal interest, and a high cost of education or financial concern.

But despite this high number of out of school youth in the country, one student proves that regardless of all the reasons to drop out of school, he will finish his studies in any way possible.

He is Jonel M. Tejedo, taking up Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management. His parents couldn't afford to send him to school so he knew that also need to find a way to help them.

Since high school, Jonel is selling chicharon, balut, itlog ng pugo, and other goods to earn extra income.
